~Des Moines Challenge Recap~
This past weekend was the most mentally challenging tournament I have been a part of. Here's a rough estimate of how my round 1 went.
8ish: Learn that tee times have been delayed by about 45 min due to lightning. 9:15 Arrive to the course expecting to tee off around 10:45 10:53 Bang a 90 footer for birdie on hole 1 10:57 Lightning delay 11:55 Resume play, go on to par only two of the next nine holes and be at -2 2:00 Lightning Delay 3:45 Resume Play, birdie four of the remaining eight holes to finish at -6
After a roughly seven hour first round I found myself in a tie for 6th and on the 3rd card heading into round 2!
I started round 2 out with back to back double bogeys . But I managed to fight back and birdie five of the next nine holes to get back to -1. Unfortunately, play was then suspended again due to lightning while we were sitting on the tee of hole 12. With play unable to resume that day, the finish of round 2 was to be completed at 9am on Sunday.
I did not show up mentally ready to play on Sunday morning for the completion of round 2. A three putt from circle 1 and back to back bogeys on 16 and 17 left me at +1 for round 2 and sitting in t39th. After being super proud of myself for staying mentally strong on Friday and Saturday, my finish to round 2 on Sunday morning was pretty disappointing.
Thankfully I was able to mentally reset in the four hours between round 2 and 3 to come back out and shoot a respectable -5 round 3 to finish in t36th.
That wasn't the end to the craziness though as Mary Elizabeth McDaniel and I then left Des Moines, IA at 5PM central time so that she could get to work by 9AM eastern time the next day! Thankfully we made it back safely with 15 minutes to spare!
Overall, this tournament was a blast! The course was fun, yet challenging and fair. The tournament staff and volunteers also did a phenomenal job despite all of the weather delays. This is a course and venue I would love to come back to in the future!
Lastly, thank you to Ryan Ulmer of Down South Discs and @teeboxdiscgolf for their support this year! I'm pretty sure a DSD polo was seen on some live coverage
The Cash Stache survives another week!
